Professor Catherine Pearlman Weighs in on Anthony Weiner Scandal

Assistant Professor of Social Work Catherine Pearlman has written a piece titled "When to Stand by Your Spouse (And When to Run)" for the Wall Street Journal's Speakeasy blog, commenting on the latest scandal surrounding New York City mayoral hopeful Anthony Weiner.

Standing by your man may be the hardest path to follow. But, a deep love and the belief in one’s marriage and family (and perhaps a good therapist) can often pull couples through hard times. While some look at Huma Abedin as a weak woman for putting up with yet another infidelity, others see her strength and resilience. The problems experienced by Weiner and Abedin may be more public, but many marriages privately struggle with similar issues. Modern feminism creates a space for women’s choice. Judgment should be suspended and understanding of a range of choices should be embraced. There is no one problem or issue in a marriage where one should leave. Equally, there is no one situation where one should be obligated to stay.
