Freshman Named Basketball Rookie of the Week; Blue Angels Compete in the Water
Center Jasmin Brandon SAS'16 was named the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference Basketball Rookie of the Week after averaging 16 points and 11.5 rebounds per game.
Brandon's best game came during the 14th annual Dr. Betty Shabazz Tournament, when she scored 16 points and pulled down a game-high 17 rebounds in the championship match. She shot 62.8 percent from the field during the week, and is leading the team in points, rebounds, and field goal percentage this season.
This is the third straight week Brandon has received HVWAC recognition, as she was named Rookie of the Week on November 20 and Player of the Week on November 27.
Despite Brandon's efforts, the Blue Angels could not overcome a sluggish first half and lost to Berkeley College, 56-41, in the championship game. It was a back-and-forth affair for much of the first half, with neither team being able to seize control.
In swimming, CNR competed in the Ranger Invitational over the weekend, highlighted by sixth-place finishes by Milagros Lugo and Tina Thomas.
Lugo finished the 200 Backstroke with a time of 3:06.80. Freshman Corrine Natal just missed the finals in the event, placing ninth overall.
Lugo also swam the leadoff leg on the Blue Angels' 200 Medley Relay team that placed seventh, with a time of 2:39.87. Joining Lugo on the relay were Claudia Benitez, Anellys Pena and Meagan Yoeono.
Freshman Tina Thomas qualified for the finals of the 100 Freestyle, and finished sixth with a time of 1:07.22. Thomas was also the top Blue Angel finisher in the 200 Freestyle, placing 13th overall.
Yoeono topped the CNR list in the 100 Breaststroke, placing 12th, and Benitez and junior Alissa Sciommeri each finished 10th in the 200 Breaststroke and 1650 Freestyle, respectively.
