Students in our English Program explore the methodology and modes of inquiry used in literary studies, the tradition and history of English and American literature, characteristics of different literary genres, the works of major authors, and a body of literature chosen to reflect individual interests. English majors avoid narrow specialization and develops abilities that are never outmoded. The English Program develops habits of critical thinking and logical analysis, introduces the student to a valuable body of knowledge, teaches insight into character, strengthens the imagination and thus the capacity to identify with others, fosters an awareness of beauty and order, prepares the student to use modern methods of research, and equips the student to express ideas with clarity and grace.
