Internships and Clinical Placements
Real world work experience — the kind you get in internships — helps increase career readiness and marketability upon graduation.
— Diane Spizzirro

Why should you do an internship?

  • Be competitive: To have an edge in today’s job market, your portfolio needs to include hands on experience in the world of work. Recruiting employers expect a history of relevant work experience to be completed by new college graduates and most grads will have done at least one, pre-professional internship during their college years. That’s your competition!
  • Develop workplace skills: Successful careerists not only have strong academic credentials, but also have developed important workplace skills and qualities that all employers value. Applying academic learning, understanding how workplaces differ from school and developing a professional demeanor are examples of some skills and qualities that can be honed in an internship.
  • Test drive a career: An internship or other practical experience is the most direct way to get a feeling for what a particular career is like. You’ll learn what its like to work in a particular field and gain an understanding of the knowledge, skills and abilities that employers are looking for.
  • Internships lead to full-time jobs: More and more employers are looking to their interns as a source of full time hires. In recent years, up to 67% of interns were offered full time positions by their intern employers. And even if you don’t parlay your internship into a full time job, you will have made important contacts that can likely help in your job search.
