COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP PROGRAM (CLP)
The
Community Leadership Program (CLP) is a program for students whose
college success cannot be readily predicted through the use of
traditional methods, such as high school grades and standardized
test scores. The immediate goal of CLP is to provide
program participants with educational and social experience which
will prepare them for competition in graduate school and employment.
Students admitted to the Community Leadership Program take credit-equivalent
and/or prerequisite courses during the summer and academic year
along with credit-bearing courses leading to the degree. Academic
advising is individualized.
Admissions
A highly specialized and sensitive approach to admission is utilized. Admission
is based upon non-traditional predictors of college success such
as letters of recommendation, the personal interview; stated motivation
to complete degree requirements, willingness to work to overcome
gaps in pre-college level competencies and skills, and congruence
between students' needs and the offerings of the College.
Requirements
A pre-freshman Summer Program offers students intensive instruction
and practice in verbal and quantitative skills, a natural science
course, and general orientation to college life.
Intended area of concentration, high school records, and test
scores determine participation in non-credit courses. All
CLP students, however, must satisfactory complete two semesters
of study skills and basic mathematics. Students interested
in majoring in the sciences must complete or test out of all CLP
and/or supportive courses during freshman year.
Pre-Nursing
All Community Leadership Program students interested in nursing
will be admitted directly into the School of Nursing. This
program allows the students a maximum of two semesters to establish
a 2.3 grade point average (GPA). After the completion
of the sophomore year, the nursing student must maintain a minimum
GPA of 2.3 to remain in and graduate from the School of Nursing.
Academic advisement during the first year will be provided jointly
by the School of Nursing and the CLP Office.
