MATHEMATICS

The need for the knowledge of mathematics is pervasive throughout society.  From the simple task of balancing a checkbook to the more complex tasks of analyzing statistics or systems, the skills of logic and critical reasoning acquired through the study of mathematics are vital.

The Mathematics Program begins with an acquisition of fundamental knowledge and skills in calculus, analytic geometry, and algebra, to enable students to understand the ideas, methods, and language of modern mathematics.  While developing mathematical techniques and an appreciation for the mathematical values of form and structure, students also explore the history of mathematics and its relationship to other human achievements.

A mathematics diagnostic examination is required at the time of entrance to the School of Arts and Sciences.  This examination determines placement in the Mathematics Program should the student elect or be required to enroll in a Mathematics course.


REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the requirements of the School of Arts and Sciences, the Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics requires pre-college mathematics through trigonometry and a total of 41 credits in mathematics/Physics.  These courses must include:

  • Differential Equations
  • Analysis
  • Linear Algebra
  • Abstract Algebra
  • Numerical Analysis
  • Mathematical Statistics
  • Discrete Mathematics
  • Seminar in Mathematics
  • General College Physics I
  • General College Physics II

Students majoring in Mathematics may select the Bachelor of Science degree by taking a minimum of 60 credits in Science and/or Mathematics.
